Charles Hoskinson speaks out about the technical issue during the Glacier Drop airdrop.
Charles Hoskinson has just commented on the technical issue affecting the Glacier Drop airdrop for ADA users on the Ledger wallet. The problem stems from Ledger only supporting CIP-8 message signing with a limit of 31 bytes, while the payload of the airdrop is as long as 251 bytes — exceeding this limit.
Despite having requested a software update since July, Ledger has not yet adjusted to Cardano's standards. Currently, a temporary solution proposed is to sign an empty transaction with a payload in the form of metadata — a technique that has been applied in the NFT space.
Ledger users do not need to rush, as they can still retain their airdrop eligibility during the two-month redemption process.
The incident highlights the challenges in implementing a multi-ecosystem, while also emphasizing the importance of improvement proposals for Cardano such as CIP-8 in standardizing compatibility between wallets. Some users of Keystone and Trezor wallets have also reported inconsistent results.
