Abstract generation in progress

Auction house Christie’s (UK) has just established a new department allowing the use of cryptocurrency in real estate transactions. According to the New York Times, Christie’s International Real Estate has built a team of crypto experts, lawyers, and analysts to support bank-free transactions, notably a $65 million villa in Beverly Hills purchased with Bitcoin.

Currently, Christie’s is selling approximately 1 billion USD worth of real estate that accepts payment in crypto, spanning from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree. CEO Aaron Kirman stated that payment in cryptocurrency allows the wealthy to remain more anonymous, as transactions are conducted through intermediary legal entities and blockchain is hard to trace.

Christie’s has auctioned NFTs and launched an auction platform on Ethereum since 2022. They are also working with banks to have cryptocurrencies accepted for home loans, predicting that they will account for more than 1/3 of housing transactions in the next 5 years.
