The United States demands the European Union to make imbalanced trade concessions, which may provoke a countermeasure from the EU.
On June 21, in the trade negotiations between the United States and Europe, the United States demanded that the European Union make unilateral concessions that were considered unbalanced by European officials. If the terms of the potential agreement do not improve, the EU will have a difficult decision on whether to take countermeasures. According to people familiar with the matter, the best-case scenario remains to reach an agreement on principles that will allow negotiations to continue beyond the deadline of early July. Washington's demands can be grouped into three categories, the first of which is the adoption of measures related to fish export quotas, which EU officials say may be inconsistent with WTO rules. The second category is non-reciprocal tariff-related initiatives. The third category is a series of economic security demands that EU officials have described as far-fetched. Even if a deal is reached, many of Mr. Trump's tariffs will remain in place, people familiar with the matter said. The EU has been seeking a mutually beneficial agreement that will assess any final outcome and decide at that stage how much asymmetry it is willing to accept – if any.
