Letter form Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell
Expresses concerns from several U.S. Senators about the expansion of facial recognition technology at airports by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The Senators urge Congress to prohibit TSA’s development and deployment of facial recognition tools until thorough congressional oversight is conducted.
They emphasize the privacy and civil liberties threats posed by this technology and highlight its potential misuse, including its expansion from 25 to over 430 airports with little public or congressional oversight.
The Senators argue that the TSA has not provided evidence that facial recognition technology has made air travel safer and cite a 3% error rate in identifications. Which has implications for false identifications and security breaches.
They call for a focus on fundamental improvements in TSA’s screening process rather than an expanded use of facial recognition.
The letter is signed by the following Senators:
- Jeffrey A. Merkley
- John Kennedy
- Edward J. Markey
- Roger W. Marshall, M.D.
- Kevin Cramer
- Ron Wyden
- Steve Daines
- Elizabeth Warren
- Mike Braun
- Bernie Sanders
- Cynthia Lummis
- Chris Van Hollen
- Peter Welch
- Raphael Warnock
These Senators are advocating for a re-uation of the role and deployment of facial recognition technology in TSA operations.
Stressing the need for proper regulation and oversight to safeguard the rights and privacy of American travelers.
Data to be Collected⬇️
📇Only during the field demonstration data collection efforts, TSA collects a live photograph of the passenger, passport number, known traveler number, transactional metadata (e.g., transaction ID, timestamps, quality scores), and the match results.
📇TSA converts the information into an anonymized format, encrypts it, and transfers it for temporary analysis to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science & Technology Directorate (S&T), which assesses the effectiveness of this biometric field demonstration. DHS deletes the data within 180 days.
What these Senators might not be aware of is an additional layer of security could be added to this and all of this could be verified with Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT)
HGTP has already been proven within the Federal Government it can handle mission critical data at scale via IRON SPIDR
